Food Blog Conference With A Cause & Discount: Food Blog South
I am so excited to be a speaker at such a great event coming up on January 22, 2011 in Birmingham, Alabama: FoodBlogSouth. If you’re looking to be a better food blogger and be proud that you can tell the world where to find the best shrimp & grits, join in. This idea was Shaun Chavis’ brainchild. Shaun Chavis is the Associate Editor at Health Magazine. She manages “The Birmingham Foodie Book Club” and wanted the club to do something to contribute to the community. Somehow that turned into a blogging conference to benefit the Desert Island Supply Company, the new non-profit writing center that started earlier this year in Woodlawn, AL. This is a place where volunteers teach after-school writing and blogging workshops to 4th and 5th graders. Shaun said, “I really think FoodBlogSouth has the potential to do other good things too… I think it’s cool to bring Southern food bloggers together to network, learn from each other, and talk about the things that are unique to Southern food bloggers. For example, Southern food is a big trend now. People are looking to us for comfort food, and there’s a revival of classic American flavors.”

I am very fortunate to have met Cookbook Author Holly Clegg about 9 years ago at one of my first conferences at IACP. I truly appreciated how down-to-earth, inspiring and helpful she was and still continues to be. Known as “Queen of the Quick”, Holly is a Baton Rouge resident who brings her Southern charm to every aspect of her life. Her busy lifestyle and desire to feed her own family health-conscious, homemade meals, even when in a time crunch, has served as her inspiration throughout the years with her total of 7 cookbooks. Her latest cookbook, “Too Hot in the Kitchen: Secrets to Sizzle at Any Age”, is filled with 200 easy-to-prepare recipes, nutritional information, diabetic information as well as photos, adorable illustrations, coffee parings and more. It is so fun, whimsical and is designed for today’s busy woman.
I seriously had a difficult time trying to decide what recipe to feature from this book. Since I’m a Southerner as well, I thought the Barbecue Shrimp recipe would be great for this time of year. It’s so easy, light and quick with only 179 calories, 8 grams of fat and 4 carbohydrates.
