5 Favorite Fall Recipes

Trick or Treat Martini

Halloween is next week. Can you believe it? I love Halloween and look forward to it every single year (even though my three kids are teens now). I am in Hawaii this week for a work trip (heavenly), but I’ll be back in time for Halloween. I told my husband that I want to stay home for Halloween–I love giving out candy and seeing all the little kid’s costumes. As you can tell between food and travel, October has been a very busy month with recipes, my Italy trip, travel stories due, and edits on my next cookbook. I wanted to share some of my latest 5 favorite fall recipes that I created and photographed for Momspark this past month starting with my Trick or Treat Martini. These 5 recipes are fun to make and serve to friends and family this October and for the coming months ahead!

Apple Cinnamon Cake

Cinnamon Apple Cake via @alisonlewis

My sister, Julie, asked me to make an apple cake for this Sunday night for Rosh Hashanah. We are having 18 people so a birthday cake and Mandel Bread just aren’t enough :). Since I am making the main dish too, I decided to make this Apple Cinnamon Cake, a super easy apple cake that is also very simple to slice. No mixer is needed for this recipe, and those most difficult part is is peeling and chopping the apples (luckily my husband is a pro at this). This comes out moist and fabulous (I think the Greek yogurt really helps add to its fluffy texture). Serve this with coffee for dessert or for breakfast or afternoon tea. This recipe is a keeper and wonderful tribute to a sweet new year.

Apple Snack Mix

Are you looking for something new for an afternoon snack mix? Or how about a healthy snack your kids can take to school? This Apple Snack Mix recipe has all of my favorite ingredients, and it’s made with freshly homemade dried apples. This snack recipe has been my go-to back to school snack for the kids. This would also make a great holiday gift idea, holiday open house snack. or fun idea for holiday school parties. For the apples, you can use almost any type such as Honeycrisp, pink lady or Braeburn or Granny Smith.

Apple Ginger Chillers

Apple Ginger Chillers

Just in time for another hot summer, U.S. Apple Association (USApple) has mixed up Apple Ginger Chillers, a simple and refreshing mock-tail that tingles the taste buds with a delicious trio of apple cider, ginger beer and vanilla bean syrup ingredients. Apples truly are the superfruit for everyone. The health benefits of apples and apple products were first recorded as early as medieval times and “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” still holds true. Research has verified this statement and recent studies have linked apples/apple products to helping with everything from weight loss to different types of cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and even asthma. Some of the most recent studies on apples and apple products have linked apples with improving the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and possibly decreasing your risk for developing it as well as improved immunity and gut health due to the pectin (soluble fiber) found in the apples peel. Even though it’s summer, don’t every forget about amazing apples!

Chicken Apple Smoked Gouda Grilled Cheese

April is National Grilled Cheese Month, and I can’t believe it has been 2 years since the release of my 150 Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich Cookbook published by Robert Rose. To celebrate, I am sharing my Chicken Apple Smoked Gouda Grilled Cheese Sandwich. The roasted chicken pairs nicely with more info

the sweetness of the apple and smokiness of the Gouda cheese. Feel free to substitute turkey, pork, or shrimp for the chicken. If you are on a gluten-free diet, use your favorite gluten free bread or tortilla wraps. I use one deli-style rotisserie chicken. It yields the perfect amount and will save you time. Enjoy and happy April! To purchase copy of my book, click here.

Fennel-Apple Slaw

I am a huge fennel fan so this recipe for Fennel-Apple Slaw is one of my new fall favorites. Fennel, which looks like a cross between an onion and a bunch of celery, has a slightly sweet anise (licorice) flavor. It has the perfect crunch to pair with shredded cabbage, and it makes a great addition to any salad or slaw recipe. I love it in this vegetarian combination with Greek yogurt, walnuts, dried cranberries and fresh dill. Fennel is also good for you, containing Vitamins A and C, fiber, folate, potassium and calcium.
